Stunners claim crown in WCU Summer Classic Del-Val U12 boys recently won the West Chester Summer Classic. This is the first year the team has participated in the tournament. Knowing that the tournament attracted some highly competitive teams, the Stunners were unsure of what to expect. On Saturday they started the tournament by knocking off the Coventry Kixx 3-0. Next up was BYC Hurriquakes, a friendly rival from our own league. The 2 teams fought hard under the hot sun to a end with a 0-0 tie at the final whistle. This meant if the Stunners wanted a chance at the title they would have to win their final 2 games. Sunday would start off against Kirkwood Hammers Elite. Kirkwood had won their first 3 games so Del-Val knew they had to come out strong and hand Kirkwood a loss. The battle started early with Kirkwood getting the first goal. The Stunners quickly came back to tie the game and it would end at halftime 1-1. The next 24 1/2 minutes would prove to be a battle between the 2 teams with neither team able to put the ball in the net. With many scoring opportunities that the Stunners just couldn’t finish on, it was with 34 seconds left in the game that the offense got their opportunity to get the ball to striker Brendan Fabian who would find the top right corner of the net to score the winning goal for Del-Val. With giving Kirkwood a loss, they just needed to finish off Greater Harford Falcons to claim the title. Stunners came out strong to score 3 goals in the first half but the Falcons answered back with 1 just before the half ended. The Falcons came on strong in the 2nd half and scored another goal early on. With only a few minutes left in the game it would be Brendan Fabian who once again would be fed a break away pass to finally put the game away for a 4-2 win and a 1st place finish. In addition to Fabian, the strong offense was led by Michael Watkins, Tyler Budgick, Ben Schreiber, Nick Pitone, Wesly Brooks & Bryan Sladek. The outstanding defense was comprised of Eddie Morris, Shane Loftus, David Speed & Daniel Germani. The solid goalkeeping was shared by Eddie Bayliss & Ricky Blair. Guest players George Hooper & Andrew Wade contributed to both offense and defense. Other Stunner players are Evan Lyon, Jermie Falcone & Kevin Nunn who were unable to attend the tournament.
